Blue Jacket

A jacket as blue as the damn red sun,
Blinding me through the narrow window.
My soul, my pocket, my throat as one —
Bone dry. I'm an incurable weirdo.

Water runs down the roof of tin,
The roof sings back as the rain comes in.
"Da-da-da"
"Da-da-da"
Stairwells, farewells, arrests, and chains.
"Oh, shit. Again."

The biggest skeleton in my closet
Is me, my red sun.
I'm poison. Poison, that's me.
Though I get prettier every day,
I'll smear my face with gouache anyway!

You chuckle and cough through your Belomor,
Lost in thoughts of the motherland.
Oh, my enormous philosopher,
All hunched up.
Poor thing.

"A shame we don't read the papers.
A shame we don't stare the TV down.
Or ever go to doctors.
We just smoke, smoke, smoke like beasts,
Turning ourselves into chimneys,
Growing taller year by year,
And the smoke grows blacker,
And the smoke grows thicker,
And the smoke goes up and up.
Isn't that right, my dear?"

"Hey, what about coffee? Can I have a cup?"
"With milk?"
"Milk? Oh, give me a break!
I like my coffee straight, for fuck's sake!"

They water down everything for sale!
Coffee, cigarettes, booze, and love,
Like nobody's watching from above.
They'll sell every last stool!
Every rag, every scrap, every goddamn thing!
All that we've gathered,
All that we've saved,
All that we've dragged to the grave...

"Your coffee?"
"Keep it. I've had my fill!"

"Hold on. Where are you going?"

"Me?
To the clouds!
To hell with you all!
I'm out!
Goodbye!
Goodbye, my red sun,
Goodbye, rotten roof.
You've drunk your fill of my blood,
You philosopher, you!
And the color of my hair,
If not today, then tomorrow,
Will change, completely change,
Just like rivers change their course,
Only backwards, of course —
Not rivers running into the sea,
But the sea running into rivers.

"Run, run, little stream,
Take this petal
From every corner of the world
To the other side.
Maybe that's where the answer is?"

"No,"
Said the Sphinx,
Who couldn't see past his own nose.

There's no market for our feelings.
We're naked and barefoot.
Sharing one cigarette,
waiting for dawn...
